HMDW Architects has wide ranging and rigorous expertise in conservation and restoration, drawing on experience from developments of grade I, II* and II listed buildings. St. Augustine’s, Highbury has now reopened, as seen above. External redevelopment at St Andrews, Earlsfield has been successfully completed, and is featured in the media. Work has finished at St. Mary and St. Gabriel, South Harting, adding a sympathetic annex to the Grade I church. The Phoenix Cinema has now reopened: the country’s oldest continuously running cinema, with celebrity-driven funding and support. The project is headlined in BD magazine, the BBC news website, and a film has been produced by film critic Mark Kermode, introducing the newly restored space. We are currently embarking on extensive reworking and crypt excavation of St Jude’s Church, South Kensington.
Alongside this, we are always involved in other smaller projects, such as minor redevelopments and landscaping, and have worked with budgets up to £5 million. In the past we have rejuvenated listed churches dating back to 1086, as well as commercial renovations within Millbank Tower and significant redevelopment schemes for the Bank of England.
Our schemes meet the often complex demands of the client, whilst engaging positively with English Heritage, The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and other amenity groups. We strive to produce designs that are sympathetic to the site, as well as the existing buildings, without imposing a particular in-house style on the client. The Principal and Directors each have decades of experience within the field and are AABC registered (Architects Accredited in Building Conservation). They personally oversee and manage all projects from concept to completion.
